Kenyan Love

Addressing the primary issue

Let me start by appreciating the diversity in Kenyan lives, we can juggle from one direction to another. I think it is only in Kenya where you can find all the cultures and trends of the entire universe. You can never feel bored or out of place while in this wonderful nation as each side of the globe is equally represented. It might be a compliment though, but i feel like we have completely lost it. Our own culture and pride is diminishing when each day dawns. We are quick to condemn and criticize our own while we praise and make the outcast and import almost everything. A quick piece of thought stroke me while i was watching an evening Friday program on a local TV show. One of the Kenya's most celebrated music band was being interviewed and they raised an eyebrow on music consumption in Kenya. The great deal was that we as Kenyans are swift to condemn than to create and appreciate. Any little issue, people rush to social media or any available platform to criticize and pour out their hate.  To critique is not the issue, but the manner we raise our grievances brings a contention. Back to the "music importation" story; there is no single FM station in Kenya that is dedicated to local music. I am aware of one, but after listening to it i thought I was in Nigeria because the purported local music played hails from West Africa. The media will argue that they play what we want to listen; on the other hand, musician and the public point their fingers to the media. Blame game... en-he, it is not a new thing in Kenya right from politics to our marriages. Nobody wants to carry the cross and shifts it to the next person; simply, we are not Jesus. Let me borrow a culture common with the western countries "although it happens mostly in movies" when you go to apologize to a person you wronged, the first response is "I made a mistake for not doing this and that..." Mind you that is the wronged person taking on the blame of a crime he/she didn't commit. In such a humble manner, people learn how to co-exist and life  moves on swiftly. Likewise, if each of the stakeholder in Kenyan industry took the initiative and accepted to relinquish his or her role; perhaps we might be kilometers ahead.  Any single day that we will enter a club and the DJ plays local songs for at least half of the night... probably it will be a milestone move towards achieving our objectives. Then Kenyan FM stations and TVs slot adequate time for local programming it will be a notable move. The audience also plays an integral role in promoting local substance. Let us start by loving our own and reducing the high level of hate  in our souls. When you see a Maasai or Turkana men and women dressed in their local attire; don't start thinking like those people are so uncivilized, instead view them as Kenyans who have maintained our heritage. When Kemboi, Rudisha, Kenya7s team, Lupita among others shine on the global auidience we should be creating their successors. Let your role model be a Kenyan, watch at least two KPL matches per weekend, your phone ringtone let it be kenyan, your favorite actor, your crush, your dream college let it be Kenyan. As a result, we will appreciate ourselves and we will earn honor and respect from others.
